Reishi

The Mushroom of Immortality

In the mesmerising world of forests and fungi, we encounter the remarkable Reishi mushroom (Ganoderma sp.). Celebrated for its unique attributes, ecological significance, and an array of potential health benefits, Reishi weaves a story all its own, enriching both our forests and our well-being.

Reishi holds a revered place in holistic medicine for its potential health benefits. Known as the "Elixir of Immortality" in Asia, it is believed to enhance vitality, support the immune system, promote overall wellbeing,

reduce stress, help aid sleep, and offer a sense of calm and relaxation. As a rich source of antioxidants, Reishi aids in neutralising harmful free radicals, offering protection against illness and supporting mental and physical well-being. Reishi's potential to boost overall vitality and enhance the quality of life makes it a true gift from nature.

In the ecosystem, Reishi plays a pivotal role. As a saprophytic fungus, it excels at breaking down decaying wood and returning vital nutrients to the soil. This ecological importance underscores the intricate web of life within our forests, as Reishi diligently contributes to the balance and vitality of these ecosystems.

Reishi Mushroom

Reishi is a globally distributed mushroom. There are countless different species of the Ganoderma genus spread throughout the world. The most notable of these varieties is Ganoderma lucidum, which has emerged from Asia as one of the great bastions of the mushroom kingdom. This species of Reishi has been used since time immemorial, and has featured prominently in Traditional Chinese medicine. So revered has Reishi been in Chinese culture that it has passed into the realm of art and history. In this image, you can see a wizened sage holding this beautiful mushroom as a symbol of the wisdom of medicine.

We have many different species of Reishi in Australia. The most popular cultivated variety is Ganoderma steyaertanum. Like the Asian Reishi, this mushroom grows with a glossy cap and large bands of white emanating from a deep red centre. Due to the wealth of different species of Reishi, wild foraging this mushroom can present a challenge for positive identification.

Ganoderma australe is the most common variety of Reishi in Tasmania. This mushroom forms large shelf-like brackets and grows in wet and dry sclerophyll forests. We most often find Reishi on dead eucalyptus trees, but also on silver wattle (Acacia dealbata). This Reishi, like most others, produces spores in such a large quantity that they can often be seen coating the surface of the mushroom and the surrounding area.

As with Lion's Mane, there is ongoing debate as to whether the Australian species of Reishi have the same profile of beneficial compounds as the Asian species. There is insufficient to justify an answer to this question currently. We can only reason to say there are beneficial compounds present in all Ganoderma species. We have taken the route of personal experimentation, and after experiencing what it is like to take Ganoderma lucidum extracts on and off for years, we have noticed the same (and more) benefits from our wild harvest Ganoderma australe elixir.

At Wild Remedies, we are delighted to be able to forage local Reishi mushrooms and use native Australian fungi to craft exceptional wellness products for our customers. As inhabitants of this beautiful land, we also take immense pride in our commitment to taking care of the Country we live on.

While the exact mechanisms behind the positive effects of Reishi are still under scientific investigation, their potential implications are noteworthy for individuals seeking to optimise their body's function and overall health.  It is, however, essential to exercise caution and remember that these claims have not undergone evaluation by regulatory bodies like the TGA or FDA. It is advisable to recognize that individual responses may vary, and we highly recommend you do your own research and consult with a healthcare professional before making substantial changes to one's dietary or lifestyle choices, including the incorporation of Turkey Tail or other mushroom dietary supplement.
